Create a Data Querry dataset

Scope of your analysis

Level 1/Level 2 sites

In the area marked Space, you may select the site to which you'd like to apply your analysis. You may select a Level 1 site, or a Level 2 site.

To display Level 2 sites, click on the Level 1 site in which they're contained.

Tip

Use the search tool when you're not sure about your sites' tree structure(s). The search will apply to Level 1 sites and Level 2 sites.

Dimensions

The list of available dimensions can be found in the menu bar on the left.

Select your chosen dimension and drop it to the right, in the designated area.

Once you've added a dimension, the list of dimensions to the left will automatically update. In addition to the first dimension selected, you may use all other dimensions which are still displayed for your analysis.

You can collapse all dimension categories for a more streamlined display.

Tip

When searching with the menu bar collapsed, the dimensions contained in the collapsed categories will not show. To avoid this, be sure to expand the menu before searching.

Metric and custom metrics

Once you've added all desired dimensions, you simply have to select your metrics. Click on the second tab, "Metrics", to access the full list of available metrics.

Select your chosen metric and drop it to the right, in the designated area.

Tip

You don't necessarily need to use both dimensions and metrics; you may only use metrics if you wish.

The Metrics tab contains both standard metrics created by AT Internet, as well as any custom metrics  you've created in the Custom Metrics application.

Tip

If you are unsure about which dimension(s) or metric(s) to select, click on the question mark icon to display a short definition of the element.

Please note, custom metrics can apply to a specific site in particular, or they may apply to all sites in your contract. If you've created a template using a custom metric, and you later change the site, the custom metric will most likely no longer be available:

Tip

To be able to use your custom metrics across all your sites, consider setting them to the "Global" level when saving them.

You can create a custom metric by clicking on the Metrics tabs > Add a metric. You will access the Custom metrics application.

Segmentation

A segment may be applied to a template during creation. Simply drop the selected segment in the designated area ("Drop a segment").

Tip

Segments are applied to the entire template. Segments displayed in the list are those that have been created using the Segments application.

Segments are automatically applied to the entire dataset.
For example:

  • If you apply a segment like "Country=UK" to your dataset, then all metrics displayed will only reflect performance in the UK.

  • If you apply a segment to only one metric in your dataset, you can create a custom metric based on a segment. In our example, we can segment the "Visits" metric on the country "UK". Once this segmented metric is in your Data Query template, you'll be able to isolate out visits from the UK, and then compare them with other metrics reflecting other countries.

You can create a segment by clicking on the Segments tab > Add a segment. You will access the Segments application.

Periods

You can define the period to examine using the calendar area. You may apply 1 analysis period as well as up to 2 comparison periods.

You can make queries in real time on data from the current day, simply by modifying the period in the calendar.

Tip

You can extract data from the 5 last real-time minutes using our API. For details on the syntax, please see the API section.

Set periods and relative periods

Each calendar can use either a set period (ex: "May 2015") or a relative period (ex: "last month").

For relative periods, you can use our selection of pre-set periods, or create your own relative period using the "Last X periods" and "Period -X" options.

When selecting "Last X periods", you can set your analysis to one particular day of the week, such as all Mondays during the chosen period:

Tip

Use relative periods if you plan to regularly consult an analysis. In doing so, you won't need to change the date, as the date will dynamically change over time.

Tip

For example, use the relative period "Previous week" in order to measure, on every Monday, how your marketing campaigns performed during the previous week.

For set periods, you can directly choose days, weeks or months, according to your needs. Set periods let you choose a start date and an end date using a traditional calendar:

Multiple periods

Once your first analysis has been set up, you can add up to 2 other complementary periods. To do this, click the "Add calendar" button.

Tip

You may combine relative and set periods.

Each metric in your template can be associated with the period of your choice. By default, all metrics are configured for the first period (P1).

The returned data set will list all of the items related to the analysis period (P1). In P2 and P3 columns, you'll get the numbers of the P1 items on both P2 and P3. If items didn't generate traffic on P1 but did have on P2 or P3, they will not be listed in this data set as P1 is the reference period.

If you need to edit the period you've applied to a metric, simply click on that metric and change the period in question using the "Choice of period" drop-down list.

Tip

At least one metric must be based on the first P1 period. If not, the other periods will not work.

Pre-calculations

By default, the available period for on-the-fly analyses is 1 year. However, depending on the dimensions or metrics that you're using, the analysis window may be reduced to 45 days*, whether it's the last 45 days, or any other 45-day period occurring during your data history.

As on-the-fly calculations can be lengthy and complex, you may be prompted to launch a pre-calculation. Once the pre-calculation has finished, you will be able to retrieve your analysis up to 1 year.

  • This 45-day limitation is a default value and can be increased upon option subscription. Please get in touch with our Support Centre or your Piano Analytics contact to get more information.

Building a multi-site analysis

Multi-site analyses are available in a dedicated menu, accessible via the 2 block icons at the left of the application interface. Multi-site reporting is accessible via the "standard multi-site templates" system.

(1) List of standard analyses available to be used on several sites at once.
(2) List of standard analyses available to be used on several sites at once, which you have customised (sites, periods, metrics, etc.).

In order to extract information about several sites at once, click on the drop-down list marked "Space". Select the sites you wish to include, or find groups of sites you've created in the Analyzer NX application.

Tip

You can select up to 50 Level 1 sites in a single API call. If you use an existing group of sites, this limit does not apply.

If you plan to reuse a standard template that you've customised, you can save it by clicking "Save as". Once your template has been saved, you can find it in the "My multi-site templates" area.

Lastly, should you wish to switch from one standard template to another without losing the setup of your sites and period, you can do so by clicking on "Standard Templates". Select the template you wish to switch to, and it will be loaded in your designer, all while keeping the current setup.
