Is there any way to change the date format from american to british English?

You can absolutely do that, by selecting English (United Kingdom) in your profile settings: the date format will be changed to dd/mm/yyyy.
You can access this menu by clicking the arrow pointing down in the top right corner of the interface, or by simply following this link: Profile
